Upper Williamsburg coal

Exposed in a gully in field about 100 ft. Northwest of the Southeast corner of the setion. Two fresh bulldozer cuts on either side of the gully also expose the coal. Whether the cuts were made in connection with the coal or for water detention is not known.

|
The overlying shale is gray-black, lightening in color away from the coal. It is hard and blocky with plant remains and an occasional large limonite concretion. The shale grades upward into the soil.
|
|
|
Beneath the coal is a very black, carbonaceous clay containing plant fossils. The clay becomes less carbonaceous away from the coal.
