Cement Plant at Fredonia
Measured By Newell, 8/1938
Exposure not good; compare earlier section
Unit No. Description Thickness
1 Limestone, very sandy, cross bedded, in thin slabby beds where weathered, otherwise very massive; oolitic; fossils abundant in bands; bivalve shells separated generally by current action; main features of fauna are several genera of Orthotetinal, i.e. Strytorbynchus offine, Girty (toptypes), Meekella, Derbya, etc; also a big fauna of clams, bryozoa, etc. Tis sandy limestone is the one that weathers to a brown fossiliferous sandstone in the fields, so that for a time I confused it with possible Stranger sandstone east of Fredonia and also east of Yates Center. Throughout Wilson Co. the extremem top of Stanton can be recognized in poor outcrops by the brown sandstone resulting from the weathered S. Bend. This horizon is especially useful then in mapping structure + 6 ft.
2 Limestone, absent in places, gray to buff, coarse filled with comminuted shells and crinoid columnals; limestone conglomerate at base, in which I cound a cobble of pink granite 3 in. across, some years ago. Acc to Landes the granite did not compare with Rose Dome dikes; disconformity at base with slight but perceptible relief +/- 4 ft.
3 Shale and thin bands of limestone in irregular layers, shows best in weathered outcrops, 6 in. up to +/- 3 ft.
4 Limestone, soft, massive, oolitic, white to brown where iron stained; contains peculiar exotic fauna in which a number of new species were found by me. Some of the genera such as Schizophoria, Parenteletes, Helictostylus, "Hexagonella", common here, are unknown in mid contPerms elsewhere 5 ft.
5 Limestone, gray, crystalline, sparsely fossiliferous and containing no distinctive fossils 18 ft.
6 Shale and thin beds of limestone, greenish to gray, contains a few brachiopods and crinoid columnals; correlated by position just above distinctive Capt. Cr. limestone +/- 3 ft.
7 Limestone with bluish to black spots in matrix of gray, fine limestone +/- 2 ft.
8 Limestone, coarsely xln, dove to gray, pseudobrecciated contains Enteletes pugnoides, Triticites neglectus +/- 2 - 5 ft.
