Nichols Field Oil & Gas Data

General Field Information

Produces Oil: Yes Produces Gas: Yes
Exploration Method: Subsurface geological data
Drilling Casing Practices: Completion practice during the first year of drilling in this field was to set the pipe through the producing section, perforate, treat with mud acid and sand fracture the formation. The Mollie Greenwood 1 (15-097-10134), however, which was drilled by the Ohio Oil Company, was completed open hole with no treatment.

MISSISSIPPIAN

Formation Lithology: The reservoir rock in the Nichols Field is most appropriately called the Mississippian chert breccia. It consists of chert fragments in a green or light gray clay matrix. These chert fragments vary in size from microscopic to 10 inches across. The fragments are mostly angular, but lower in the chert section they are subrounded to subangular in a dolomite matrix. At least two, and probably more, hypotheses have been proposed by geologists as to the origin of this chert breccia. In situ weathering seems to be the most popular and accepted hypothesis, but movement of weathered materials off Mississippian topographic highs into local channels or depressions must be considered, at least in part, as an explanation for the variable gross chat thickness. Porosity in the chert breccia unit is of two types. One type is solution, pinpoint to vugular, which is the result of weathering. The second type is due to fracturing of the breccia, resulting from either collapse of the breccia and from either contemporaneous or subsequent Pennsylvanian movement. Permeability is found in both the fractures and solution vugs, as well as at the interfaces of the chert with the shale matrix. The productive capacity of the chert section is controlled by local permeability changes. Consequently, a test with poor drill stem performance might make a fair well after treatment. In structurally high wells, the chert section is observed to thin and become more calcareous in the productive interval, another case of varying porosity-permeability conditions in the area.
Trap Type: This trap was formed by a stratigraphic updip pinchout of the Mississippian chert breccia and by local porosity and permeability conditions. The trap lies on the crest and flanks of a southwest plunging anticlinal nose. The oil zone lies on the southeast flank of the nose.
