Short description: El Cuartelejo at Lake Scott State Park in Scott County. In the late 1890s, paleontologists excavated the ruins of this Southwestern-style pueblo and found the remains of rectangular fireplaces lined with stone, a grinding stone, post holes, pottery fragments, and evidence of a destructive fire. El Cuartelejo, possibly dating to the 17th century, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964.
