Short description: Fort Zarah, two miles west of Great Bend, was built in 1865 to help protect travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. It closed in 1869. A blockhouse was built from Dakota Sandstone quarried just to the north. No structures survived, but a roadside park was established near the site.
