Place Name: Fort Zarah

Short description: Fort Zarah, two miles west of Great Bend, was built in 1865 to protect travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. It closed in 1869. A blockhouse built from Dakota Sandstone quarried just to the north and other structures did not survive, but a roadside park was established near the site.
