Short description: Sorghum field. View west from Pawnee Rock, which stands above the fertile Arkansas River valley. Pawnee Rock was used as a lookout point by Native Americans and travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. Originally 150 feet high, it was cut down to about 60 feet by the railroad and settlers, who used the Dakota sandstone for buildings and other purposes.
