Short description: Buildex quarry in Franklin County. The first Buildex Inc. expanded shale lightweight aggregate plant was built in Ottawa and began production in 1950. Buildex, Inc. produces expanded shale lightweight aggregate——a lightweight ceramic material produced by expanding and vitrifying shale in a rotary kiln. It used in the production masonry, concrete, and asphalt chip seals.
