Short description: "Monarch of the Plains" sculpture by Peter "Fritz" Felton at Fort Hays in Ellis County. Fort Hays, established after the Civil War to protect the Smoky Hill trail and abandoned in 1889, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
