Short description: View across the Red Hills in Comanche County. Soils, shales, siltstones, and sandstones in the rugged Red Hills region get their color from iron oxide (rust), which turns bright red when exposed to oxygen. The region's butte-and-mesa topography was influenced by layers of gypsum, and the Red Hills are sometimes called the Gyp or Gypsum Hills.
