Short description: Alcove Spring in Marshall County. Alcove Spring was a stop on both the Oregon and California trails in the mid-19th century. Water is emitted over a hard, resistant Permian limestone ledge overlying soft shale, drops into a shallow pool, and then runs toward Big Blue River. The waterfall flows mainly during the spring months and is usually dry by summer. The spring was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
