Short description: Donner Party gravestone in Marshall County. Alcove Spring was a stop for travelers on both the Oregon and California trails in the mid-19th century, including the ill-fated 1846 Donner party that later became snowbound in the Sierra Nevada mountain range with tragic results. A member of the party died earlier at Alcove Spring and is buried there in an unknown location. The spring was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
