Short description: Mission Creek at Echo Cliff in Wabaunsee County. Sediments deposited in a shallow sea during the Pennsylvanian were later compacted into sedimentary rocks, mainly marine limestone and shale. When the sea receded, streams cut through these rocks, and the channels filled with sandy deposits that eventually were compacted into freshwater sandstone known informally as Indian Cave sandstone. A later stream cut through the sandstone and other layers to create Echo Cliff.
