Short description: Pawnee Rock, standing above the Arkansas River valley, was used as a lookout point by Native Americans and travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. Originally 150 feet high, it was cut down to about 60 feet by the railroad and settlers, who used the Dakota sandstone for buildings and other purposes. The Kansas Historical Society oversees the Pawnee Rock Historic Site.
