Short description: Fort Harker guardhouse at Kanopolis in Ellsworth County. The guardhouse, constructed of native sandstone quarried about two miles northeast of the fort, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Fort Harker was one of three forts established after the Civil War to protect the Smoky Hill trail. For a time, the guardhouse served as Kanopolis city hall.
