Place Name: Fort Zarah
Short description: Fort Zarah, two miles west of Great Bend, was built on Walnut Creek in 1865 to help protect travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. It closed in 1869. The railroad bridge crosses the creek beside the U.S. Highway 56 bridge.
